Block a Website Without Any Software

If you are on Windows then there is a good news for you, you can block a website without any Internet Security Program or software. The all you need is a text editor i.e. Notepad (maybe you should try Notepad++). And here are some simple steps to Block a website on a Windows Operating System.
  • Open Run and type "notepad C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" without quotes or simply goto C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and open hosts file with notepad.

Open the hosts file

  • Now at the bottom of the file you can see something written like 127.0.0.1 and localhost.
Raw Document

  • Here I'm taking example of www.orkut.com, www.example and yahoo.com as shown in the picture below but you can add site of your own choice, must remember to add 127.0.0.1 at the start of the line and leave a space or TAB and save the file. Now open your favorite browser and try to access the sites that you have blocked, you can't access. Later on if you want to see the blocked site then remove those sites from that file and save it again.

  3. Reply to Qayyimah: If the document won't save, it may be because it has been saved as a read only folder. To change this you will need to un-check the box labeled Read-only in the General properties tab for the hosts file.
Warning: if you're an advanced user, you probably know how to do this already; if you're not an advanced user, this is probably not a task you should attempt on your own.
